Week 1 GETTING STARTED
January 17   First day of class/syllabus intro’s etc / discussion/ goals/ vocabulary
PINK TIME VIDEOS/ DAILY JOURNAL EXAMPLE
Introduce UNIT 1: Still-life painting
Homework: collect mags and photos ephemera etc,  purchase a canvas 16” x 20” or larger, get all supplies

Week 2 UNIT 1-- NATURALISTIC SKILL PERSONAL STILL LIFE
January 22    still life construction & color studies---bring personal still life objects today and supplies to make a “set” quick personal still life
January 24   quick “retinal” studies in paint--variety of samplings/mixings (use canvas paper)
Homework: Journal on 3 Artists that will inspire your still-life, print images for journal, complete 3 at-home “retinal” studies in these styles of artists


Week 3 UNIT 1-- NATURALISTIC SKILL PERSONAL STILL LIFE
January 29   Begin Still-life painting
January 31   Continue Still-life painting, introduce Portraits: Dogs and Cats
Homework: Finish still life painting, gather reference photos on dog/cat images in journal, find a real dog/cat to draw in motion studies

February 3   Curator Talk of New Show at UNM Art Museum, 3-4pm Keller Hall

February 3---May 6   Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Art @ ABQ Art Museum


Week 4 UNIT 2-- PORTRAITS: DOGS AND CATS
February 5   CRITIQUE: STILL LIFE PAINTING, share plans in groups for dog/cat paintings
February 7  Begin dog/cat paintings
Homework: continue dog/cat paintings, complete research and color study

February 8   Undergrad Event @ UNM Art Building 6-8pm

February 9   Professor Zimmer’s MFA Thesis Exhibition 5-8pm @ Exhibit 208


Week 5  UNIT 2-- PORTRAITS: DOGS AND CATS
February 12   continue dog/cat paintings
February 14   GALLERY VISIT: MEET AT 2:15PM AT EXHIBIT/208, introduce Zoom paintings
Homework: Finish Dog/Cat paintings, planning for zoom paintings, find your image and surface for Zoom painting project


Week 6  UNIT 3—ZOOMS
February 19   CRITIQUE: PORTRAITS OF DOGS/CATS, share plans for zoom paintings
February 21  Begin Zoom paintings
Homework:  continue on zoom paintings, prepare supports construct painting to stretch up to 4’x 5’ for after SPRING BREAK

February 23  Curator Talk: Curator Series  @ 5:30pm Sanitary Tortilla Factory
February 23  CNM Joint Class Talk on Artist Professional Development 10:30am-12pm @ Art Annex


Week 7 UNIT 3—PINK –TIME/ ZOOMS
February 26  continue zoom paintings
February 28   PINK- TIME
Homework:  finish zoom painting

March 2   GAA Graduate Juried Exhibition 5-8pm @ UNM Art Museum
March 2   Charis Fleshner MFA PAINTING Thesis Show @ CFA Downtown 6-9pm


Week 8 MIDTERM/ ZOOMS
March 5   Share PINK-TIME explorations, CRITIQUE: ZOOM PAINTINGS
March 7 Midterm one-on-one meetings (10 min each): intro big format painting, (collaborative in class painting project)
Homework: thumbnails ideas, etc planning for big form painting. Color studies


Week 9 (SPRING BREAK)
continue daily journal exercises, collect items to put in journal


Week 10 UNIT 4--BIG FORM PORTRAIT
March 19   big form portrait studio day- 4 x 5 foot support must be stretched,  primed, dry, ready to work on – prior to class- refine and edit color studies/plans
March 21  big form portrait
Homework: continue big form portrait


Week 11 UNIT 4--BIG FORM PORTRAIT
March 26    continue big form portrait, short in-progress critique
March 28   PINK-TIME
Homework: PINK- TIME, continue big format portrait


Week 12 UNIT 4-- BIG FORM PORTRAIT
April 2   continue on big format portrait, 
April 4   FINISH Big Format Portraits, introduce final project, Share PINK-TIME explorations 
Homework: planning and prep for final project

April 5  MFA Art Studio Reviews (all day)


Week 13 UNIT 5—STUDENT CHOICE FINAL              
April 9   begin final project: supports complete and primed, ready to paint- all prep ready
April 11  Install Paintings in Centennial Library, visit Molly's studio?
Homework: continue final project

April 13  Arts Unexpected (all day events)


Week 14 UNIT 5—STUDENT CHOICE FINAL
